Late Gadolinium Enhancement

Late Gadolinium Enhancement

Late Gadolinium Enhancement (LGE) is an advanced imaging modality harnessed in cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the detailed examination of heart tissue. The technique relies on the unique properties of gadolinium-based contrast agents, allowing for the enhanced visualization of fibrotic or scarred regions within the myocardium. This method proves particularly useful in unraveling the intricacies of myocardial infarctions, inflammatory cardiomyopathies, and an array of cardiac conditions. By strategically timing image acquisition after the administration of gadolinium-based contrast agents, LGE facilitates the identification of areas exhibiting delayed contrast uptake. This temporal approach enables clinicians to precisely locate and assess pathological changes within the heart muscle. Notably, LGE offers a non-invasive means of delving into the structural abnormalities of the myocardium, contributing significantly to the diagnostic armamentarium of cardiology.
